Mud Volcanoes of Southwestern Taiwan
Mud volcanoes are fun features observable in various places in southwestern Taiwan, usually associated with tectonic structures.
Some volcanoes look like small mud cones, while others consist of mud pools or tiny intermittent holes in the ground. The vents expel cool mud from a deeper mudstone formation and gases, mainly methane and CO2.
Some sites are always more or less active. Bursts of activity seem to correlate with regional earthquakes and precipitations. Together with colleagues from Taiwan and France, we will have a closer look at mud volcanoes to get a better understanding of their origin and behavior. Stay tuned!
